About Greater Birmingham Humane Society

Location:

300 Snow Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209, US

Mission Statement

Dedicated to promoting respect for life through education and prevention of cruelty to animals and people.

Description

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society has been in continual existence since 1883. The organization shelters and adopts unwanted pets to responsible, loving homes. Greater Birmingham Humane Society also investigates animal cruelty in cooperation with local law enforcement officials. Greater Birmingham Humane Society provides educational resources to local schools and other organizations and promotes responsible pet ownership throughout the community.

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society moved to their new location on Snow Drive in November of 2004. Since moving to the new facility, they have expanded their efforts to aid the community. Some of these efforts include:

  • Community Day - a vaccination and microchip clinic that is held on the first Saturday of each month at the GBHS
  • Art Gallery - local artists have kindly provided the GBHS with their works of art for exhibition and sale. A portion of all sales will be donated to the GBHS.
  • Interactive Education Center - the GBHS has two interactive computer stations as well as other interactive learning stations for children and adults to learn more about animal behavior and proper care of pets.
  • Humane Teen Club - allows youth from 12 to 15 years old to participate in GBHS activities and earn points leading to their graduation as a full-fledged GBHS volunteer prior to being 16 years of age.
  • Reading Library - is available to the public and contains numerous books on animal behavior, breed types, and other animal related materials. Books may not be removed from the library but the public is welcome to utilize this resource.
