In honor of National Endangered Species Day, St. Lucie County’s Environmental Resources staff is seeking volunteers to assist in the removal of exotic and overgrown vegetation at the Harbor Branch Preserve on Saturday, May 16 from 8 a.m. - noon.
Located at 5600 U.S. 1 North in Fort Pierce, adjacent to the Ocean Discovery Center at FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, the preserve houses the largest populations of the federally endangered Lakela’s Mint, which is only found near the border of Indian River and St. Lucie Counties, and nowhere else in the world.
Volunteers should bring gloves, hand-tools and water. Bring sunscreen, a hat and bug repellent, if you desire. Additional water will be provided, along with a mid-morning, early lunch. Volunteers will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to working.
Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the St. Lucie County Environmental Resources staff at 772-462-2526. Space is limited to 30 volunteers, so please sign up early to reserve your space to help be a steward of a local natural treasure that is one of the rarest plant species in the world.
The St. Lucie County Environmental Resources staff is partnering with Bok Tower Gardens to clean up the habitat at this county-managed preserve and protect this endangered plant species.
