Help Tend the Welcoming Prairie at Hastings' Old Mill Park

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Friends of the Mississippi River

In fall 2014, Hastings High School students and FMR ecologists planted a small prairie at the entrance of Old Mill Park. Volunteers are now needed on Thursday, June 18, 2015 -- 6:00-8:00 p.m.

to work with FMR Lead Ecologist Karen Schik and Stewardship Events Coordinator Adam Flett to help remove weeds and assist with other tending tasks that to help the young plants make it through their first summer.

Once established, the prairie plants will provide much-needed bee, butterfly and bird habitat. The plants also double as a park amenity, serving as a beautiful welcome to Old Mill Park. Be sure to make extra time to explore this popular city park, home to a nearby oak savanna being restored by FMR as well as the ruins of Minnesota's first mill on the banks of the Vermillion River.

This river is a rare trophy trout stream, a major tributary of the Mississippi River and the inspiration for the Vermillion Stewards program, helping residents learn about the watershed while working to protect and enhance its unique natural resources.

Space is limited and registration required. For more information, including how to register for this event, visit: http://fmr.org/participate/events/old_mill_prairie-2015-06-18

Mission Statement

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) engages people to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities region.

Description

Friends of the Mississippi River is proud to work with roughly 3,000 volunteers annually.

We keep volunteering simple, fun and satisfying -- there are no applications, and you can sign up for one event or several. We list events especially in need of volunteers here on VolunteerMatch.com, but maintain a full calendar of 60+ events a year at www.fmr.org/events.

Our project work includes conservation and restoration of natural areas and habitat, education on watershed protection issues, and organizing activities that connect the public to the Mississippi River.
