ORGANIZATION: Extraordinary Extras

This summer we are hosting a Book Club for at-risk middle school students to try to get these kids into reading and to mentor them. Every other Thursday at 2pm, we will meet at the Norman Public Library to discuss a book the students read over the previous 2 weeks. The other Thursdays we will take the kids to do fun things like go to HeyDay, Climb Up, go hiking, etc. The kids will only be able to attend this if they read the last book and came to the book discussion.

We would like our volunteers to be willing to commit to volunteering the whole summer (if you have to miss a couple of weeks, that is okay). This way you can form a connection with these kids. The Thursday's we meet at the library, we will likely only be there from 2-4 at the latest. Some of the fun activity weeks, it may be for a longer period of time.

Mission Statement

Vision: To create a world where every person has the opportunity to build a better future for themselves.

Mission: To provide diverse and fun literacy opportunities to promote education and end poverty.

Description

Extraordinary Extras is a startup nonprofit that plans to use Fun Education to Fight Poverty. The next 7-9 months we will just be focusing on marketing, online and off, local service projects, and fund raising for our overseas programs, which will be starting unique libraries/youth centers in developing countries for the poor and homeless.

Our first one will be in the Philippines where the Executive Director who has relationships with a school for homeless and poor children and many other people and organizations that will make it easier to get our Library off the ground. We will teach and tutor these children in Reading, English, Math, Computer, and Life Skills. They will earn points for their learning achievements. With those points, the kids will be able to purchase extracurricular activities and donated prizes, like old iPods or Kindles. Therefore, the children will have the desire and ambition to spend time in a safe place where they will learn and have fun. We will also not discriminate. A public library allows anyone to take advantage of its resources, rich or poor. In the Philippines, there are very few rich people, but even they have very little access to books. In Cebu City, the second largest city in the country, there are only a few book stores and one public library, which is only open during hours most people are at work or school, and people are not allowed to check out books. We believe that if we, not only educate, but make reading and learning become a part of their culture, people will have a brighter future and be able to dig themselves out of poverty.
