ESL and Life Skills Volunteer

The Refugee and Immigrant Center, Asian Association of Utah offers free and low-cost English as a Second Language classes to adults of all nationalities and backgrounds. Improving English speaking and comprehension skills can help individuals to better find jobs, apply for citizenship, and navigate the complexities of a new culture.

As an ESL and Life Skills Volunteer, you can assist refugees and immigrants in improving their English skills. Volunteers conduct group activities, assist students in understanding concepts, and help the course instructor.

We offer classes Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Location for this position is at either the Asian Association of Utah (155 S 300 W) or Sunnyvale Neighborhood Center (585 W 3900 S).

Hours for this position are somewhat flexible and an extended commitment is not required. However, we do ask that volunteers assist with at least one class a week.

Description

The Refugee and Immigrant Center -Asian Association of Utah was founded in 1977 and is a private, non-profit and community-based organization. Originally established to support Asian immigrants and refugees in their transition to life in the United States, the organization has expanded its resources and services over the past 40 years to assist refugees and immigrants from around the world. Today, we serve over 2,000 refugees, immigrants, and other community members each year. With over 60 staff members, our backgrounds cover 17 countries and over 30 languages.

We are devoted to helping clients become more self-sufficient in their daily lives, and aim to reduce the barriers that refugees and immigrants face when adapting to life in the U.S. With the help of staff, volunteers, and community leaders, we are continually developing and expanding our services to meet the needs of our clients.
