Do you love the written word and appreciate its ability to elevate the human condition? Our volunteer teachers do!
For over 18 years, InsideOUT Writers (IOW) has conducted weekly writing classes inside L.A. County's juvenile halls. Now we are expanding into Orange County Juvenile Hall after a successful pilot program! Classes are taught by local writers, artists, educators and activists. The mission of the Writing Program is to empower incarcerated youth by giving them a safe, non-judgmental place to express themselves and channel their anger and frustration into writing, rather than self-destructive behavior.
We are seeking committed, talented and innovative volunteer teachers who know that pen and paper can be tools for personal transformation. Has writing enriched your life? Have you lived or taught in an area where the route to prison was more paved than the route to college? Can you commit an average of 60 - 90 minutes of your time each week? We hope so. Our students are waiting for you.

Description
Founded at Central Juvenile Hall in 1996, InsideOUT Writers (IOW) has conducted weekly writing classes within the Los Angeles County Juvenile Hall System for 16 years. Classes are taught by local writers and educators. The mission of the Writing Program is to empower incarcerated youth by giving them a safe, non-judgmental place to express themselves and channel their anger and frustration into writing, rather than violence.
As a compliment to the Writing Program, in 2009 IOW launched the Alumni Program, which is designed to reduce recidivism and delinquency in at-risk youth who have been released from juvenile detention.
