America for Animals is a start-up nonprofit organization headquartered in San Diego, California. We are a new type of animal welfare organization - one that empowers advocates to help animals in the communities where they live. We are building state-of-the-art web and mobile applications that provide tools for advocates to connect, organize, participate, and most importantly, make a difference in the lives of animals.
We are looking for a Treasurer to help make AFA a giant success. Broadly, that means maintaining an overview of the organization’s affairs, ensuring its financial viability, and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are maintained. More specifically, you would be asked to execute the following duties:
Financial Management
- Establish sound policies for the management of income and expenses.
- Monitor the receipt of all securities and money due to and held by the organization.
- Ensure that all funds are properly deposited in organization’s designated depository.
- Oversee the preparation of the annual budget and monitor its implementation.
- Sign financial forms and instruments as necessary.
- Ensure that the organization has an appropriate reserves policy and investment policy.
Compliance
- Ensure that all federal, state, and local financial reports are filed on a timely basis.
- Prepare and file the organization’s Form 990.
- Ensure that the organization maintains tax-exempt status.
- Ensure the organization’s financial information is available to Board members and the public.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare and submit an annual financial report to the Board of Directors.
- If required, contract with an independent CPA to conduct an annual financial audit
General
- Maintain knowledge of the organization and personal commitment to its goals and objectives
- Inform the board about its financial duties and responsibilities
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting systems and internal control requirements.
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial statements, budgets, and budget projections.
- Knowledge of financial reporting requirements for pertinent regulatory agencies.
- Ability to work in a team and to delegate responsibility.
- Ability to develop methods or make recommendations of maintaining positive cash flow
- Knowledge of and commitment to the purpose and programs of the organization.
- Knowledge of and skills in financial planning.
- Knowledge of QuickBooks.
- Experience with nonprofit and/or for-profit organizational dynamics and management principles.
- 5 hours per week availability.
- Openness to learning.
