This great team-building opportuntiy allows volunteers to enage directly with seniors in their community. Volunteer groups deliver Disaster Kits to homebound seniors around the city. The kits are to be used during an earthquake or other emergency.
What: The Emergency Kits, containing a two-day supply of food and water, are for use during an earthquake or other disaster.
Who: 5-20 teams, consisting of 2-4 people: up to 80 volunteers!!!
When: Volunteer events can be scheduled Monday through Friday, usually during business hours. The event usually lasts 2-4 hours, depending on time spent with each senior.
Where: The event begins with a training at the Meals On Wheels of San Francisco office in the Bayview neighborhood. Deliveries are made throughout the City.
Note:
- One car per volunteer team required.
- Two week notice is needed to plan an event.
- We may bee albe to plan routes near your work or school, though this is not always possible.
More about this program:
- The city of San Francisco has provided a grant to MOWSF for the purchase and distribution of Emergency Food Kits to homebound seniors.
- Homebound seniors are among the most vulnerable populations in the City and can be severely impacted by the event of an earthquake or other disaster.
- 24% of the seniors MOWSF serves have no source of food other than MOWSF--making these kits crucial should a disaster delay meal deliveries.
