ORGANIZATION: Needs Beyond Medicine

Purpose: To advise and assist with the leadership and general promotion of Needs Beyond Medicine in support of the organization’s mission, programs, and needs.

*General board responsibilities:

  • Provide input and advice regarding general leadership
  • Maintain membership and organizational information of the board of directors
  • Oversee financial management
  • Provide program advising and assistance
  • Ensure promotion of the organization
  • Provide community interaction and outreach
  • Focus on fundraising and donation procurement (gaining financial supporters)

*Members of the board share these responsibilities while acting in the interest of Needs Beyond Medicine. Each member is expected to make recommendations based on his or her experience and vantage point in the community.

Length of term: Two years, which may be renewed up to a maximum of one consecutive term. Additional terms require approval of the board. One year option is available to willing candidates, that want to support Needs Beyond Medicine.

Meetings and time commitment:

- The board of directors currently meets every month beginning in January, even months will be virtual and even months will be in person, locations be determined.
- The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Meetings typically last 90 minutes. Board members will have a variety of assignments and each is expected to participate and offer input at each meeting.

- Board members are asked to promote two events per year (including Karen P. Brown Relief Golf Tournament and canSURVIVE, as well as any additional fundraising events).

Board Overview
Needs Beyond Medicine board members help advise the organization on growth and expansion, as well as offer any new ideas and strategies for board consideration. NBM focuses on the Relief Program, KPB Relief Golf Tournament, canSURVIVE and educational seminars throughout the state. The board will offer input and ideas on helping the organization maintain financial stability, expand within the community, and encourage potential expansion into other states. Input on partnerships with companies and future fundraising events is required.

Philip Brown is the Founder & CEO of the organization and oversees all aspects of the operations. Mr. Brown will report activities and request input and ideas from each board member.

Expectations of board members:

  • Attend and participate in meetings and special events.
  • Be aware of concerns that can be addressed by Needs Beyond Medicine's mission, objectives, and programs.
  • Be a community advocate for Needs Beyond Medicine by actively promoting its mission and programs.
  • Become familiar with Needs Beyond Medicine's budget and financial/resource needs.
  • Understand the policies and procedures of Needs Beyond Medicine.
  • Increase public visibility and increase donors/fundraising throughout the year.

Description

Relief Program
Needs Beyond Medicine’s Relief Program creates financial assistance grants for cancer patients to use for necessary nonmedical living expenses such as rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, and other essential costs. The Relief Program brings much-needed assistance to adults facing the fight of their lives.
Educational Outreach Program
Needs Beyond Medicine helps raise cancer awareness to the public by supporting and promoting community outreach programs through partnerships with other health-focused organizations. Our goal is to help raise awareness and to educate the public regarding symptoms of some of the top diagnosed cancers. All of Needs Beyond Medicine’s educational seminars are free to attend, offer essential information about early detection, and provide attendees with additional resources for prevention.
canSURVIVE
canSURVIVE is Needs Beyond Medicine's annual fundraiser and gallery stroll that features portraits and individual stories from cancer survivors. Select participants are still undergoing active treatment.
