There are many advantages to partnerships in the community, especially in the area of community awareness. The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, with the assistance of the Arkansas Department of Human Services, has implemented a program that is designed to encourage youth to engage in positive leadership development and roles within their communities.

Therefore, the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will host the Nonviolence Youth Summit Part XIII - Step Up Stop Bullying in the Student Center of the University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway, Arkansas 72035, which is slated to be held on Thursday May 14, 2015 from 7:30am until 12:30pm. Featuring a special appearance by the Honorable Tab Townsell (Preliminary Session) and Fox 16 News very own Kevin Kelly as the Guest Luncheon Keynote Speaker.

Volunteer Roles

VIP Area Captain:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to the Volunteer Coordinator or Program Coordinator
  • Set up, serve, and replenish refreshments and/or lunch
  • Meet, greet and assist dignitaries
  • Escort dignitaries to designated areas
  • Retrieve all AMLKC property in area


VIP Area Team:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to the Volunteer Coordinator and Area Captain
  • Set up, serve, and replenish refreshments and/or lunch
  • Meet, greet and assist dignitaries
  • Escort dignitaries to designated areas
  • Retrieve all AMLKC property in area


Registration Area Captain:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Early arrivals
  • Report to the Program Coordinator and Area Captain
  • Greet and sign in each person
  • Direct attendees in appropriate areas

Registration Area Team:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to the Volunteer Coordinator and Area Captain
  • Greet and sign in each person
  • Direct attendees to appropriate areas

Stage Manager:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Program Coordinator
  • Assure that program proceeds as printed
  • Assist Emcee as needed

Stage Management Team:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator and Stage Manager
  • Assist Stage Manager


Seating Area Captain:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator and Program Coordinator
  • Assign team members to post areas
  • Shift as needed
  • Assist with seating attendees
  • Crowd control


Seating Area Team:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator and Seating Captain
  • Assist with seating attendees
  • Crowd control
  • Fan Fare

Vendor Area Captain:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator
  • Vendor placement
  • Assist as needed

Vendor Area Team:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator and Area Captain
  • Vendor placement
  • Assist as needed

Door Greeters:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator
  • Open doors
  • Greet guest
  • Give Directions

Food Serving Area Captain:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Report to Program Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator
  • Food vendors setup
  • Place team where needed
  • Food served to all in attendance

Food Serving Team:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Report to Area Captain
  • Food vendor setup
  • Serve all in attendance

Parking Lot Area Captain:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator
  • Assist with parking directives
  • Assign team to key lot locations

Parking Lot Attendants:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator and Area Captain
  • Assist with parking directives

VIP/Press/Media Specialist:

The duties include, but are not limited to supervising the following:

  • Early arrival
  • Report to Program Coordinator
  • Identify dignitaries and Press
  • Escort to designated areas
  • Keep schedule for Press interviews for ED

Breakout Session Attendant:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator
  • Stationed in the appointed breakout room and remain to give instruction and assist presenter

Breakout Session Escorts:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator
  • Escort groups to designated areas

Breakout Presenter Assistants:

The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Arrive early
  • Report to Volunteer Coordinator
  • Meet and greet presenter
  • Escort presenter to designated areas
  • Assist as needed

Mission Statement


The purpose of the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is to:

  • Promote racial harmony; understanding; community service, respect and goodwill among all citizens

  • Promote principles of nonviolence

  • Promote awareness and appreciation of the Civil Rights movement and advocacy of the principles and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • Develop, coordinate and advise the Governor and General Assembly of ceremonies and activities throughout the state relating to the observance of Dr. King's Holiday

Description

The Commission is guided by Dr. King's teachings and philosophy of love, tolerance, and nonviolence. It strives for social improvement in Arkansas, helping communities and organizations achieve new levels of leadership and public service. The Commission works directly with youth and others, encouraging them to embrace alternatives to violence and discover their common humanity. Through activities that stress racial and cultural diversity, the Commission offers Arkansas youth a new understanding of the important roles they play in the communities, now and in the future.
