Teach Kids Nutrition in our Gardens and Kitchen!

ORGANIZATION: A Place Called Home

Do you have experience cooking and an interest in nutrition? Work with kids to cultivate a garden and prepare healthy meals.

Our Nutrition Department facilitates education classes with members and parents, teaching them to prepare meals that are economical, nutritious, and flavorful, while promoting an understanding that healthy eating habits can dramatically reduce risks of diabetes, obesity and other health problems.

Our programs, offered at no cost, seek to expand our member’s knowledge of many different fields non-previously explored because of the limitations of living in poverty. In fact, many of our members live in the 90011 zip code of South Central Los Angeles, a community notorious for crime, drugs, and violence; where 42% of people fall below the poverty line. To put this in greater perspective, over half of all our members come from households that make less than $15,000 a year.

Your support as a volunteer helps us build our capacity and accomplish our mission of empowering youth to take ownership for the quality and direction of their lives.

For more information, please visit our website at http://www.apch.org/ and our blog at apchvolunteerhub.wordpress.com or call and speak with Maria or Sarah at (323) 238-2412. The application is on the blog under the Volunteer Tab > Apply to Volunteer.

About A Place Called Home

Location:

2830 South Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90011, US

Mission Statement

At A Place Called Home, our mission is to inspire, encourage, and support the young people in South Los Angeles to achieve social, emotional, and economic success.

Description

A Place Called Home first swung open its doors in 1993 - a year after the LA Unrest, amidst a crime epidemic that rendered the streets of South Central unsafe for its children of any age. APCH’s mission was simple, but wrought with challenges: to provide gang-affected youth of South Los Angeles with a safe haven away from the life-threatening dangers and temptations of the streets.

Since then, a dynamic, multi-service youth and community center has evolved and grown on the corner of South Central Ave and 29th Street. For 30 years, A Place Called Home has been serving South Central youth ages eight to mid-twenties and their families through education and arts programs, mental health counseling, mentorship, job readiness, college scholarships, civic engagement, and more. At our core, we are still a place where young people who face tremendous challenges can experience the safety, joy, and opportunity that should be a part of every childhood.
