Help youth living in an afforable housing community develop their literacy skills and reach their academic goals!

As a VISTA member you will expand our capacity to promote and support reading literacy and proficiency for school age children living in and near TCHDC's affordable housing communities. Bringing an interest in kids, reading, and technology to the project, you will use your people skills (volunteer management- recruitment, training and and support) writing skills (curriculum and grant writing), technical skills (work with a digital library), organizational skills (develop a brand new reading literacy program) and communication skills to lead the development and implementation of two new program components:

1) a reading literacy-focused homework tutoring program that uses an innovative digital library called myON Reader (check it out online- http://thefutureinreading.myon.com/); and 2) a volunteer recruitment, training, and support infrastructure the will support all of our tutoring programs.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until position is filled.

Description

Twin Cities Housing Development Corporation (TCHDC) is a not-for-profit developer (with 501c3 status) and owner of affordable rental housing for families in the eleven-county metro area of the Twin Cities - Minnesota.

Since the early 2000's TCHDC has provided year round out-of-school time programming for children in grades K-12 at it's two Resource Centers, Liberty Plaza in St. Paul and Calibre Ridge in Roseville. The Programs at Liberty Plaza are PLUS-TIme (Playful Learning with University Students) for children in K-4th grade and Youth VOICE for youth in grades 5-12th. The programs at Calibre Ridge are the Camp Fire Youth (k-5th) and Camp Fire Teen (6-12th) Programs. Over the years these programs have served over 2,000 children and youth who are members of families that live in TCHDC affordable housing communities.

The goals of our Resource Center programs and services are to:

1. Strengthen the economic self-sufficiency of resident families by supporting growth in employment and training services for adults

2. Improve academic achievement and self-confidence among children and youth

3. Help residents enhance the life skills necessary to be thriving member of society
