Fraunces Tavern Museum, New York's museum of Colonial and Revolutionary War history, is seeking volunteers to assist in:
Weekday Morning School Program Docents
Serving over 5,000 students a year, our very popular school program on tavern life and heroes of the American Revolution promotes critical thinking and encourages the awareness of different perspectives. Students achieve this through discussion and inquiry-based learning. Program includes visiting the historic Long Room where George Washington said farewell to his officers in 1783 and exploring the lively artwork of John Ward Dunsmore that depict various scenes from the American Revolution. Students also participate in hands-on activities that enhance the themes from our galleries and challenge students to use what they have learned from the museum tour.
This is a great opportunity for those interested in teaching, education and enhancing their public speaking skills in a museum setting. Many of our volunteers have been inspired to pursue new careers in museum education and teaching based on their experience here.
To be a docent in our school program, a time commitment of approximately 2 hours (usually between 10am and 12noon) one morning a week is needed.
Benefits include free admission to the museum and its lectures, a $27 monthly metrocard, exhibit openings, annual docent luncheon and honorary dinner.
With the school year right around the corner, we are looking to have a few new people join our team! We need volunteers to ensure the success of our education programming and mission - you would truly be making a difference!

Mission Statement
Fraunces Tavern Museum's mission is to educate the public and encourage the exploration of Colonial, Revolutionary War, Early Republic, and early New York City history. Housed in the building where George Washington said farewell to his officers at the close of the American Revolution, the Museum places particular emphasis on the history of the tavern and Lower Manhattan during the Revolutionary War period.
Description
Fraunces Tavern Museum fulfills this mission by preserving and interpreting historic Fraunces Tavern; collecting, preserving and interpreting artifacts relating to the site and Colonial, Revolutionary War, Early Republic, and early New York City history; and presenting a variety of exhibitions, publications, and public and educational programs. The earlist parts of what is today the Fraunces Tavern Museum Complex date back to 1719 when Stephen DeLancey built the original structure as an elegant residence for his family. In 1762, the property was purchased by Samuel Fraunces, who turned it into one of the most popular taverns of the day. Best know as the site of Washington's farewell to his officers at the Revolution's close, the tavern also played a significant role in pre-Revolutionary activities, and after the war housed the offices of the Departments of Treasury, War and Foreign Affairs.
