80% of our volunteer force is made up of women. Without them, our volunteer program would not exist. Starting this year, we want to make special effort for our kids to see more male role models when they come to our Reading Parties.

With Pajama Program, you will make a positive difference in your community and in a child's life. During our 60 minute Reading Parties, you will provide a child in need with the one on one story time that they rarely experience.

We invite volunteers (18 or older), who have completed our volunteer application and passed our background check, to share their love of reading with the children we serve in NYC. Our Reading Parties begin with circle time introductions and then we dive into reading in pairs or small groups. During the Reading Party, the children receive a snack, a new book of their choice, and a new pair of pajamas. The age range of the children is from 4-12 years old. Reading Parties last about an hour and run throughout the year during business hours from Monday-Friday.

How to Apply:

You must fill out our volunteer application and sign up for your background check. Please email Jyothi Nair at jyothi@pajamaprogram.org to receive the appropriate links.

Please know that ALL volunteers must pass the background check and fill out the volunteer application to be able to attend the Reading Parties. All personal information will be kept confidential.

Please check out Pajama Program's website or email Jyothi Nair at jyothi@pajamaprogram.org to learn more about volunteer opportunities. Thank you for your interest!

Mission Statement

Pajama Program is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes and supports a comforting bedtime routine and healthy sleep for children to help them thrive. We provide new pajamas and storybooks, sleep health education, and caring connections to ensure that children facing adversity--including low family income, housing insecurity, and family instability--have the tools they need for better bedtimes. Since 2001, Pajama Program has delivered over 7.5 million Good Nights for Good Days. Pajama Program provides information, materials, and support to children and their caregivers through a national network of volunteers and partnerships with 4,000 community-based organizations across the United States, including Puerto Rico. Pajama Program also provides local programming in New York City, Atlanta, and metro-Detroit.

Description

Pajama Program is an incredible outlet for people with time and passion to make a positive impact on the lives of the children we serve.

We invite volunteers (18 or older) from a range of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. The caring and compassionate volunteers at our New York City and Atlanta Centers model a key part of a comforting bedtime routine by sharing their favorite bedtime stories with children during Storytime Plus sessions. We aim to have a 3:1 volunteer to child ratio at every Storytime Plus session. During the session, the children receive a snack, a new book of their choice, and a new pair of pajamas. The age range of the children is from 4-12 years old. Sessions last about an hour and run throughout the year.

How to Apply:

  • Visit https://pajamaprogram.org/volunteer/ to begin the application process.
  • Volunteers interested in working with children must be at least 18 years old and are required to complete a background check through our system. Active volunteers must pass a background check every 3 years.
    • The background check requires a $6.95 fee. If you are unable to cover this charge, you may contact volunteers@pajamaprogram.org
