The United Way launched its Women's Initiative in 2000. Its intent was to explore what resources women can bring to bear, financial and non-financial, to influence issues in our community. The overall theme of the initiative is empowering women to enable them to meet their basic needs, capture by the tagline: "Women building community and empowering lives."
Efforts of the Women's Initiative are focused in three areas: volunteerism, fund raising and special events.
Volunteerism: promote opportunities for women to volunteer together and with their families. Group projects are offered including: food drives, painting at a women's health agency, sorting donated coats, yard work at a half way house for women recovering from substance abuse.
Fundraising: an annual event is held each April to raise funds to support projects in the community that support the theme of empowering women to meet their basic needs.
Special events: sponsorship of educational events featuring topics of interest to women. Recent events include: financial planning, technology and diversity.

Description
We believe that improving life for all starts with improving life for ALICE.
ALICE is...
An acronym: ALICE represents the growing number of families who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. Despite working - oftentimes at more than one job - these households are unable to afford the basics of housing, food, child care, health care, technology, and transportation.
When ALICE suffers and is forced to make difficult choices, we all face serious consequences. United Way is fighting for ALICE - a population that is critical to the stability of our communities. We are looking beyond temporary fixes to find solutions that result in long-term, sustainable change for individuals and families.
