Position Summary:

Do you love to help children and have interest in helping to grow their reading skills and succeed in school? If your answer is yes, consider joining the largest AmeriCorps tutoring program in the country and make a difference in the lives of elementary-aged students! We’ll provide training so no prior tutoring, formal education experience, or experience with children is necessary. In addition to extensive training, tutors will receive on-site support from trained school literacy coaches. Tutors come from many backgrounds and include recent high school and college grads, career changers, stay-at-home parents, and retirees. Positions are filling fast so apply today!

Duties or Responsibilities:

Elementary Literacy Tutors work one-on-one with students (Kindergarten through third grade) who need extra support learning to read. Tutors are trained to use a variety of scripted Minnesota Reading Corps literacy strategies, called interventions, to provide 20-minute, one-on-one sessions throughout the day. Tutors work with the same students every day. Tutors help their students practice fluency skills such as reading with expression, stopping at punctuation marks and reading without errors. Tutors are also trained and supported to conduct quick and easy literacy assessments, and enter the student data into an online data system each week. Tutors will review student data on a regular basis with their literacy coach to monitor the progress of each student, and to know if they need to change their tutoring to better meet each student’s needs. Tutors will maintain confidentiality of all student data.

Tutors will attend required Reading Corps sponsored trainings to learn the literacy strategies, and will receive the support of a coach in order to implement the strategies successfully.

In addition, tutors may also attend some site-sponsored activities such as book fairs and family nights.
