Our Volunteers work in twos for 3hr shifts from 10Am to 1Pm or 1PMto 4 Pm the great guests from across the world that come to see the Seamen's Bethel. After an orientation you will be able to explain to the visitors the history of the Bethel and ans. most of the questions.

Mission Statement

The New Bedford Port Society the owners and managers of the Seaman's Bethel for over 183 years was formed for the moral improvement of seamen and furnishing of material relif of needy seamen and their famlies.

Description

The Seaman's Bethel is the "Whalemen's Chapel" of Melville's "Moby Dick" , and becouse of its association for one hundred and eighty three years with New Bedford shalemen, and other sailors that " Go Down to the Sea in Ships" has become known in the ports of every ocean on the globe

The chapel was built in 1831and is still an active Bethel holding many Weddings , Baptisms and Memorial Services each year.
