ORGANIZATION: Habitat for Humanity of South Central MN

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Women in South Central Minnesota are invited to help address the need for affordable housing throughout the community during Habitat for Humanity’s eighth annual National Women Build Week. Habitat for Humanity South Central Minnesota is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with support from Lowe’s, Habitat’s longtime partner in the event.

National Women Build Week, held May 2-10, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 62,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in previous years.

"We are excited to participate in National Women Build Week," said Julie Schmillen, executive director of South Central Minnesota Habitat. "This is a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a family in need of decent, safe and affordable housing."

Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008, and each year provides the support of Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills. This year, Lowe’s contributed nearly $2 million to National Women Build Week. Since its partnership began in 2003, Lowe’s has committed more than $63 million to Habitat and helped nearly 4,000 families improve their living conditions.

Mission Statement

Habitat for Humanity of South Central Minnesota is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry dedicated to building simple, decent, and affordable housing with and for families in need.

Description

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments form a revolving fund to build more Habitat homes. Habitat homes in South Central Minnesota on average cost $100,000.

Families in need of decent shelter apply to South Central Minnesota by calling or stopping by our office for an application at 1730 Bassett Dr., Mankato MN 56001, 507-388-2081. The affiliate’s family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the loan based on financial guidelines. Every Habitat affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who qualify for a Habitat home.

The Habitat ReStore sells new and gently used building supplies to the public at a fraction of retail prices. Items include cabinets, windows, doors, plumbing, appliances, lumber, tools and the list goes on! The money generated from the ReStore supports Habitat in building more homes for families in need. ReStores divert tons of material from landfills as well as make home improvements more affordable. Recycle, Reuse, ReStore
