Heshima Kenya is a really unique non-profit organization in that within our safe house in Nairobi, Kenya we have a multitude of programs designed to rehabilitate, educate, and support the women and children refugees so that when they leave, they are not just safe, they are smart, they are self-sufficient, and ready to lead an independent life upon their departure. One of these programs, The Maisha Collective is our trade program that the women have the opportunity to join to learn how to make a living using skills they already have. Participants of the Maisha Collective hand-dye scarves using a traditional African dyeing technique called Resist Dyeing (see our scarves here etsy.com/shop/HeshimaKenya). Our Chicago team sells these scarves at various markets, craft shows, and scarf parties (as well as our Etsy shop and in a few fair trade boutiques) and a whopping 100% of all proceeds go back to the women in the Collective who made them and are reinvested into Heshima programs in the safe house. We have a very small Chicago team and are constantly looking for more passionate and dedicated individuals to help us in making a huge difference in the lives of so many women and children. Working events is really fun, there are always incredible people to meet and chat with, and representing a non-profit is a feel-good experience in itself. Contact me for other future opportunities and events.

Mission Statement
Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.
Description
Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.
We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.
We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
