ORGANIZATION: Jewish Family Service of San Diego

The Hunger Advocacy Network Intern will support the work of the Hunger Advocacy Network (HAN), a collaborative of 21 San Diego organizations, including human service agencies, food banks, and advocacy organizations, that work together to achieve a long-term, systemic reduction in food insecurity in San Diego by shaping state policy.

The Intern will gain hands-on experience in policy research, non-profit policy and advocacy work at the grassroots and state level, print and digital communications, and special event coordination. The intern will work directly with the HAN Manager to assist with coordination of all aspects of program implementation, including engagement of Network Partners, analyzing legislative and budget proposals, drafting advocacy documents, coordinating advocacy meetings, advocacy capacity building, external communications (including social media, newsletter, and website), and special event execution.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor state legislative & policy developments regarding hunger, poverty, and nutrition
  • Provide support for advocacy regarding Network legislative and budget priorities
  • Draft content for external communications, including HAN social media platforms and bi-monthly newsletter
  • Research policy proposals and draft policy and advocacy resources as needed
  • Contribute to planning, coordination, and follow-up of quarterly Network meetings
  • Assist in coordination of special events and trainings

Qualifications:

  • A background in advocacy, public policy, or political science is highly desired. Knowledge of food insecurity and federally-funded nutrition programs is a plus.
  • Understanding of the California legislative process and political climate
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Google tools, Social Media platforms. Proficiency in design software, such as Photoshop, a plus.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as part of the team
  • Ability to interact professionally with a diversity of organizations and elected officials
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and respond to rapidly changing circumstances

Minimum Requirements for a Fall Internship:

  • Must be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week, between the hours of 8:30am-5pm, Monday-Friday
  • Start and end dates flexible, but internship generally runs from end of August or early September through mid-December
