MDA's Downtown Charleston Lock-Up!
Help us keep our jailbirds excited & organized during the MDA Lock-Up. This is a very easy & rewarding volunteer opportunity!

We are hosting our jail themed fundraiser, the Mount Pleasant Executive Lock Up Thursday, June 25th between 10am and 2pm.

The Lock-Up is the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s premier fundraising program. These high-profile events occur all across the country at various times throughout the year. Business and community leaders agree to be "put behind bars for good," where they utilize use their vendors, co-workers, family and friends to get donations that will go toward their "bail." Each Jailbird has weeks to raise their donations. That way, on the day of the Lock-Up event, they can enjoy the Lock-Up experience by networking with other business leaders and meeting with the individuals and families that they’re helping in their community. All funds raised by the MDA Lock-Up assist the Association in providing lifesaving research, a nationwide network of medical clinics and accessible summer camp experiences to individuals and families affected by neuromuscular diseases.

I really need some volunteers to help with the day of logistics!

Registration (1-2 Volunteers): (9:30am-1:30pm)

-This volunteer is responsible for greeting each jailbird upon arrival. Each jailbird will get a nametag. If we do not have one pre-printed for them, simply write their name on a blank one and direct them to the mug shot station. There will also be a check in sheet to record who had arrived.

(Props: Check in sheet, name tags in alphabetical order)

Mug Shot Station (2 Volunteers): (9:30am-1:30pm)

-These volunteers are in charge of dressing the jailbirds in a striped shirt (with hat) and taking a photo of them behind bars. Volunteers should also offer to take a photo with the jailbirds phone and suggest that they post the photo to social media. There will be a sheet to record the jailbird’s names so that we know who is who when we go back through the photos. After the photo is taken, the jailbird will be directed to the judge for sentencing.

(Props: a fake jail, a striped front jacket and hat, "bail me out" signs, a digital camera and photo record)

Prize Patrol (1 Volunteer): (9:30am-1:30pm)

-Each time a jailbird receives a pledge of at least $100, or pledges that total $100, they will ring a bell placed on their table. Each time they ring their bell, they will receive a raffle ticket. The volunteer on prize patrol is responsible for giving each jailbird that rings the bell a raffle ticket. They should also check to make sure that the pledge slip is filled out correctly and all the pertinent information is written on it.

(Props: raffle tickets and fish bowl)

Check Out Station (2 Volunteers): (9:30am-1:30pm)

As the jailbirds are leaving, they will stop by the check-out station to have their money totaled. Volunteers at this station are responsible for tallying each type of income (cash, checks, credit cards, pledges, online total) and recording the totals on an accounting form. The yellow copy will be given to the jailbird. The cash, checks, pledge slips and credit card slips will be folded into the accounting form and deposited in the drop box for the teller to verify. Jailbirds are then directed to the gift table.

Gift Table (1 Volunteer): (9:30am-1:30pm)

-After check out, the jailbird will head to the gift table to get a free gift for participating. There are additional gifts for the jailbirds who were able to raise enough to send a kid to camp.

We will feed you lunch!

Mission Statement

At MDA, our mission is to save and improve lives of people fighting muscle disease.

Description

We fund research to find treatments and cures, create programs to support and empower families, and rally communities by aligning with supporters who care. More specifically, we fund a free clinic where patients can be seen by all the needed specialists in one location at one time, a "loaner closet" to help with equipment procurement, help with repair costs, and most celebrated is the MDA Summer Camp where kids ages 6 to 16 with one of 43 muscle diseases can just be regular kids at camp.
