For 30 years the mission of Dyslexia Tutoring Program has been to work with low-income children and adults who are dyslexic or have a language-based learning disability. If eligible, students are matched with tutors who have completed our 22 hour training class conducted by instructors versed in a research based multi-sensory skills method, using the tenets of Orton-Gillingham, and other supplemental programs proven to be most effective in remediating reading, spelling, writing. Tutors must submit to background screening (criminal check and review of references). They must also agree to: periodic reviews by the Tutor Coordinator to help with quality of instruction; complete 60 hours of tutoring services, and the submission of a monthly tutoring report.

We ask a lot from our tutors, but all this training is free with the completion of 60 hours of tutoring. If you have the time and were withal to help us, let us help you give hope, and self-esteem to those in need, one word at a time.

Mission Statement

The mission of the organization is to teach low-income dyslexic youth and adults to read. This is accomplished through professional assessment and tutoring by volunteers whom we have trained in the Orton-Gillingham Method of Reading, Writing, and Spelling.

Description

The Dyslexia Tutoring Program provides tutoring and assessments for low-income children and adults with dyslexia or language-based disabilities for free. Our volunteer tutors are trained through a twenty-hour course in Orton-Gillingham, a proven method of teaching reading, spelling, and writing. After the training course, tutors are matched with a student who they will help to achieve their greatest goal-the ability to read. Through the dollars raised from foundations and private donors, we are able to send some of our students to summer camp programs at private schools for dyslexic children, where they will receive intensive one-on-one tutoring. We have also started a new initiative, which gives families guidance in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process; to make sure these children are receiving the appropriate special education services at their schools. We are one of the only organizations in the country that we know of which provides our services free of charge.
