Victims of domestic violence often experience trauma and trials involving domestic violence legislation can be stressful. It can be made worse by a number of factors. Clients may fear facing their abusive partner in a court of law or of retaliation. They may find it difficult to seek support from family and friends to see them through the court process.
As an advocate, your role is to provide emotional support for the client during the court proceedings. Support from advocates can provide comfort and help them through the court process.
Training: You’ll first go through training that will give you an understanding of the courts and the procedures related the court process and help prepare you to support our clients.
Availability: Ideally, you would be available all day in case the hearing is extended for some reason. Generally, though, volunteers should be available from 8 am to 12 pm on any day from Monday through Thursday.
Location: The courthouse is located at the Civil Court Building at 201 Caroline, Houston, TX 77002. You would have the option of meeting clients at AVDA’s office and walking with them to court or meeting clients at the courthouse. Note, though, that we can only validate parking at the AVDA office.

Mission Statement
AVDA's mission is to work to end violence in families by advocating for the safety and self-determination of battered people, promoting accountability for those who batter, and fostering a coordinated community response to domestic violence.
Description
Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) is a private non-profit (501)(c)(3) organization founded in 1980 by the National Counsil of Jewish Women in Greater Houston. In efforts to aid a battered woman who had little access to information on legal rights or the services of an attorney, they formed an organization to serve as an adjunct to local women's centers and to function as a resource to other battered women who had nowhere to go.
Since then, AVDA has provided advocacy, safety planning, and legal representation to over 60,000 victims of domestic abuse while also offering intervention services to over 10,000 domestic violence perpetrators.
