KMAC is seeking volunteers to participate in The Mending Project, an interactive and sculptural artwork for the upcoming exhibition, Food, Shelter, Clothing.
This exhibition examines the complex references associated with food shelter and clothing with artists that employ materials that are also associated with the first level of Abraham Maslow’s 1954 construction of the hierarchy of need.
The Mending Project by artist Lee Mingwei is an interactive installation in which visitors will bring various damaged textile articles to the museum to be mended. Visitors will choose the color of tread they wish from the hundreds of mounted spools, and watch as their clothes are mended. The mended article, with thread ends still attached, is then placed on the table along with previously mended items, ultimately creating an ever-progressing sculptural collage. Owners will return to the museum on the last day of the exhibition to retrieve their garments.
Volunteers will be asked to participate for 3 hour shifts, in which they will activate the artwork by mending visitor’s clothes and interacting with the museum public.
