Become a Waimea Valley Volunteer Greeter

Waimea Valley is looking for volunteers interested in being Ho'okipa Ambassadors, these individuals work as greeters in our visitors center. This opportunity is great for an outgoing, helpful individual who is interested in meeting new people from all over the world. You are going to be the first smiling face that the visitors will see when they enter the Valley and will have the chance to enjoy sharing this beautiful and unique place with our guests. you'll help them get started on their Waimea Valley Adventure and have the opportunity to learn about this beautiful place as you work.

Due to concerns about the corona virus we will probably not have this position open until June or July, but exceptions might be made for individuals who are in decent health and are under 65 years of age. However, we will be trying to follow social distancing protocol and CDC and State guidelines to ensure your safety if you do decide to join us. This will include hand sanitization, surface disinfecting and use of face masks.

We want the guest's time here to begin with someone who is happy sharing their Aloha spirit and helping the guests learn about all of the many wonderful things we do here. The Ambassadors are our welcoming presence, stationed at the Waimea Valley visitor center. Their job is to inform patrons of the available amenities and programs, gauge the public's opinions and interests, and serve as eyes and ears for the valleys condition and environment. They are an integral part of the team and help us to share our valley with all who enter.

The greeters are a committed, vibrant group of individuals that support the guests' learning and exploration of Waimea Valley. We take the time to ensure that our greeters are trained and taught about the botanical gardens, the significant cultural sites and the history of this wonderful valley. They spend their days in our visitors center answering guest questions, sharing our many attractions and events, and directing the visitors to the ticket booth.

Our Ho' okipa Ambassadors share aloha for Waimea Valley, enjoy interacting with people, and want to make a positive difference in the community. Volunteers like you come from all ages and backgrounds, but share a passion for making the Waimea Valley experience better for all. The regular volunteers in the visitors center come in as often as 2-3 times a week, but if you want to, you can be there every day, shifts are available 7 days a week. Having the presence of these volunteers not only helps us welcome more people to the valley, but it helps the knowledge we share reach our community.

To apply, contact the Volunteer Coordinator at: volunteers@waimeavalley.net We only ask that you commit to training and setting up a regular schedule with us so that we can ensure that the area is always covered.

Description

Waimea Valley is a living pu'uhonua (sanctuary) for and by kanaka (Hawaiian People). We strive to celebrate and share a vibrant and living Hawaiian culture with the world.

The land managed by our organization is nearly 1,900 acres. We have a beautiful botanical garden spanning about 300 acres from our waterfall to the highway. The garden contains over 5,500 species of plants from all over the world including many rare collections and some of Hawaii's most rare and endangered species. It's not just endangered plants here, we also protect endangered birds and fish in this amazing ecosystem. The back 1,500 or so acres is set up as conservation land where we are actively protecting and rebuilding the native forest habitat.

We welcome you to experience Waimea Valley and be a part of the volunteer team that works to protect this sacred place. Let's honor and perpetuate Hawai`i’s past, be active stewards of our present and plan for a prosperous and healthy future.
