We operate a youth-run urban farming, cooking and conservation program in which teens are paid to carry out meaningful work in their community (East St Paul). In the Spring & Fall we recruit volunteer groups to engage in our work with our staff and youth participants at our farm and public park sites.
Urban Roots is looking for eager volunteer groups to work in our gardens this fall. Our main goal for fall is putting our garden beds to bed for the winter, this task includes weeding, harvesting, raking, shoveling, and sometimes laying compost. Come out, be active and make a difference in your community!
Optimal Group Size: 10 to 30 people
Time Commitment: 3 hours
Volunteer shift times are on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9-12pm or 12:30-3:30pm. We have some flexibility with these days and times, so please inquire via email if you need.
We supply tools, gloves, water and lots of fun!
Contact jjandro@urbanrootsmn.org to schedule your shift!

Mission Statement
Urban Roots is a Saint Paul organization whose mission is to cultivate and empower youth through nature, healthy food, and community.
Description
Urban Roots provides paid internships to youth on the East Side of Saint Paul. Youth interns develop leadership, entrepreneurial, and life skills through our Market Garden, Conservation, and Cook Fresh Programs. Each year, up to 80 youth interns, ages 14-24, participate in our progressive, tiered programming, connecting to one another and to the world around them.
Our three programs:
Conservation youth interns support and improve green spaces around the East Side, and participate in the restoration of local parks through removal of displaced plant species, native seed collection, and installation of native plants.
Cook Fresh youth interns learn valuable skills in food preparation, safety, and planning and also explore nutrition, career preparation, and the cultural importance of food.
Market Garden youth interns participate in small-scale crop production in our urban gardens. The produce that's grown goes to the Cook Fresh program to be made into shared meals for interns across all three programs. Produce is also taken to farmers markets and distributed to East Saint Paul community hunger relief efforts.
