Mission Statement

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana provides continuous, one-to-one mentoring relationships for children ages 6-17 from primarily low income, single-parent homes through carefully screened volunteers called "Bigs", who serve as positive adult role models and offer support and guidance.

After a thorough interview process with the adult volunteer, the child and the "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" are compatibly matched.

A "Big" and "Little" make a commitment to be matched for one year's duration and can make the decision to renew each year until the child reaches the age of 18, or family circumstances dictate the closure of the relationship.

The two meet on a regular basis of at least once or twice a month (depending on the program) and do such things as reading books, playing games, going to the park, or most importantly, just talking and having fun.

Their relationship is monitored and supported by the professional Big Brothers Big Sisters staff.
