ORGANIZATION: Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans

Volunteer Tutor supporting literacy section of Home Builders Institute (Construction Training Program)

Location: Gretna branch

Days and times: Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-4pm

Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic support during assigned hours focused on Math and Reading
  • Support academic improvement through Khan Academy
  • Develop a full working knowledge of academic skills development materials and strategies

Qualifications:

  • Strong GPA in college coursework
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Flexibility with regard to work environment
  • Openness to training and skills development
  • Ability to work with students one-on-one and in small groups
  • Availability to work at least 2 hours per week during 2014-2015 academic year, currently the schedule is Tuesday and Thursdays 3 to 4 PM

HBI is a national leader for career training in the building industry. It prepares students with the skills and experience they need for successful careers through pre-apprenticeship training, job placement services, mentoring, certification programs, textbooks and curricula.

With an 80 percent job placement rate for graduates, HBI training programs are taught in local communities across the country to youth, veterans, ex-offenders, displaced workers and other underserved populations.

HBI training programs do more than just provide job skills; they build character and self-esteem, providing students with the interpersonal skills they need to succeed on the job and in life. This gives graduates a solid foundation for becoming valuable members of their communities and responsible citizens.

HBI helps national, state and local policymakers understand the importance of creating a skilled workforce for the building industry and assists state and federal agencies, local workforce investment boards and home builder associations further their goals by providing workers with valuable job skills that match local workforce needs. It partners with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) on various workforce development initiatives.

Mission Statement

The Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans mission is to increase adult literacy by supporting existing adult literacy programs and advocating for increased resources and support for adult literacy initiatives in the Greater New Orleans region.

Description

  • We provide professional development and training for literacy providers

  • We annually host the Greater New Orleans Regional Adult Education Graduation Ceremony for over 150 graduates representing 7 Adult Basic Education Programs

  • We partner with the YLC One Book One New Orleans to distribute the book to Adult Basic Education programs along with creating a lesson plan for adult learners

  • We convene monthly Adult Basic Education meetings to share information regarding adult learners latest best practices; and provide new programs networking support to build strong and sustainable literacy programs. Approximately 15 programs participate every month.

  • We have the 21st Century Success Principles curriculum which builds workplace skills by means of a work readiness curriculum.

  • We provided the Learner Web program to Adult Basic Education programs, a national partnership that provided Internet access and tutoring to individual to increase boradband use to 5,000 individuals in New Orleans.

  • We work to bring more resources for adult literacy into the region through outreach events and media to educate the public on the importance of literacy and a literate workforce

  • We initiate advocacy and public policy activities on issues that affect literacy.

  • We help ensure public documents are written in easy to understand language with "Preparing for Storms in Louisiana."
