Neighbors meeting neighbors in MCC Program

Background Information: Refugees are individuals that have fled their home
country because of experienced persecution or a well-founded fear of
persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, membership in a social
group, or political opinion. Mankato is not a primary resettlement location.
However, over the past decade Mankato has become home to an increasing
number of secondary refugees. These are refugees that were originally resettled
elsewhere in the US, but have since then migrated to Mankato in search of a
better life for their family in Minnesota.

Volunteer Role Description: The Community Connector role is a unique
opportunity to participate in a cross-cultural exchange experience and provide
welcome to neighbors who have entered the U.S. as a refugee. Tapestry Project
curriculum allows community connectors and refugee participants to engage in
two-way learning through open conversation around specified session topics. All
program participants are encouraged to share and actively listen to the life
experiences, personal stories, and questions that surface through these
discussions.

About MCC Mankato Area Refugee Services

Location:

501 South Second St., Mankato, MN 56001, US

Mission Statement

Refugee Services is an ecumenical ministry welcoming persecuted people from around the world into new lives of freedom, hope, and opportunity in Minnesota.

Description

The Minnesota Council of Churches (MCC) opened a new branch office in Mankato in April 2012 to help provide a system of supports for the growing refugee population. Over the past decade, Mankato has become home to an increasing number of secondary refugees, refugees who have migrated to Mankato from all across the US in search of a better life for their family in Minnesota. MCC Mankato Area Refugee Services supports refugees and former refugees as they seek to establish lives full of hope and opportunity in Mankato. We support refugee community integration and transition to self-sufficiency by providing the following services: Case Management, Job Placement (must be state eligible), Immigration adjustment, and Community Engagement and Outreach services.
