1,400 athletes and coaches from across the state will participate in the 2015 State Summer Games, featuring competitions in Athletics Track & Field, Throwing, Aquatics, Basketball, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Tennis, and Volleyball. The venues hosting the athletes will include The College at Brockport and AMF Dewey Garden Lanes in Rochester, New York.

Volunteers are needed to: Set up and break down sports venues, distribute lunches, sell merchandise, help with our Opening/Closing Ceremonies, and Olympic Village.

A Social Volunteer is: A person or group who would like to have an experience that has an open schedule and open opportunity to be our cheering section and hospitality greeters for our athletes. This is a very important role, as many athletes travel far and do not always have the opportunity for their families to attend and cheer them on. So we encourage you to attend the competitions and light the fire within these champions to give them that extra boost of encouragement to go for the gold!

A Service Volunteer is: A person or group who is willing to commit and dedicate their day to the athletes and willing to do the job needed of them. These jobs can include, but are not limited too: set up, athlete escorts, stagers, timers, scorekeeping and etc .

If you would like more information on how to become a volunteer please visit our website http://www.specialolympicsny.org/ for more information or contact Shannon Flaherty at sflaherty@nyso.org

About Special Olympics NY

Location:

94 New Karner Rd, Suite 208, Albany, NY 12203, US

Mission Statement

To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description

Special Olympics New York provides inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to discover and unleash the champion within. Our athletes experience the thrill of competing in authentic sports. They overcome defeat, taste victory and stay active for life.

Every competitive athlete, no matter what their abilities, shares certain qualities. Drive. Perseverance. Confidence. For athletes with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics New York provides a training ground where those qualities are refined and given room to grow.

From the Young Athletes program for children ages 2 through 7, to Unified Sports that bring together athletes of all abilities, to credible competitions, Special Olympics New York athletes have the opportunity to compete on a level playing field.

Along the way, athletes develop skills that accompany them through every part of life, helping them set an example of what people with intellectual disabilities can really do.
