Orange County Respite Services needs volunteers to provide regularly scheduled visits with seniors to provide respite to family caregivers. Offer the gift of time to family caregivers who face the ever-present challenges of caregiving. Respite volunteers offer short-term (1-4 hours) respite care to seniors, allowing caregivers to take a break, run errands, nap, etc.

Our goal is to match volunteers and families so that time spent is valuable for both.

Requirements: 4 hour Initial Volunteer Training Class, application, criminal background check, copy of driver's license, confidentiality agreement, and liability release.

Qualifications: Patience, compassion, flexibility, dependability and good active listening skills are needed. Volunteers need to be able to establish and maintain boundaries. The volunteer must be able to put the patient's interests first. Being well grounded and possessing good common sense are important.

Time Commitment: Generally visits are made 1-4 times a month and are 2-4 hours in length. We ask that volunteers commit at least four hours a month for a minimum of 6 months.

Location: Volunteer visits take place in the home of the senior whether it is a private residence, assisted living facility, or nursing home. We have caregivers all over the Orange County needing your help.

Reporting: Volunteer visits are part of the senior's plan of care and monthly reports of visits must be submitted at the end of each month to the Volunteer Coordinator.

Benefits: The benefit of helping others who are not able to repay you is priceless. Complete training is given to Volunteers to address all aspects of the senior’s care. The Volunteer Coordinator will attend the first visit with each volunteer and will be available for any questions or concerns. Continuing education in end-of-life issues is available to all volunteers.

Requirements:

  • Driver's License Needed
  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training

Our focus is on making living at home for aging seniors a reality while safeguarding their unique needs. Families will have peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are being visited by compassionate and qualified volunteers. We need your help to make this dream happen.
