Promotores Program Support

ORGANIZATION: Sea Mar Community Health Centers

The Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Promotores Program is one of several aimed at reducing barriers to healthcare access faced by the local farmworker community. It is centralized in both Whatcom and Skagit counties. The promotores themselves are members of the farmworker community, many of whom are indigenous peoples from Mexico and Guatemala. In a grassroots, people-helping-people model, we are able to increase health awareness and access to health information and services in a way that is not only culturally-appropriate, but accessible. This model of health promotion is particularly effective with our target population because of the promotores unique perspective and insight into community needs. This approach offers us a very effective means of accessing and educating community members that face complex barriers to healthcare information, resources and services. Specific health promotion activities include: health and community resource fairs in migrant camps and farms every summer; year-round community outreach events; peer-to-peer health education, facilitation of mobile medical and dental clinics, and connecting farmworkers with clinic services.

As the MSFW Promotores Program approaches its 5th year, we would like to continue to grow in many ways, but are limited by our available staffing and resources. We do believe many of the opportunities we are identifying, and accompanying tasks and projects, would be of interest to many people in the greater community.
