It is the Mission of HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program) to provide accurate and objective counseling, advocacy, and assistance with Medicare, health insurance, managed care, long-term care, and related health coverage plans for Medicare beneficiaries, their representatives, or persons imminent of Medicare eligibility, and to educate the public on Medicare and health coverage issues. Volunteer position: administrative volunteer for HICAP of San Mateo County. Summary: Responsible for assisting clerical assistant with administrative responsibilities and inputting data into the program database. Essential Functions: Photocopy handouts for counselors and clients. Assemble information packets for counselors. Assemble mailings-folding, stuffing, labeling and stamping envelopes. Put HICAP labels on printed material from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Senior Medicare Patrol and other sources. Keep handouts and booklets organized for easy retrieval for staff members and clients. Alert staff when they need to print more labels for the following items: handouts, booklets, mailing labels and return address labels. Put outgoing mail through postage meter and take to mailbox on site. Shred client information (ex: intakes)or other items as directed. Data entry into program database-Peer Place. Input client survey results into Google Drive. Qualifications: Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Sensitive to the needs of the elderly and disabled adults from diverse ethnic and minority cultures. Good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to type quickly and accurately. Good computer skills. Willing to follow agency guidelines. Maintains confidentiality regarding HICAP clients and program. Previous experience working in a office environment. Available to volunteer 2 hours per week. Plus, an additional 2 hours per month before the counselor in-service training held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Available to increase volunteer hours before and during the Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15-Dec. 7) and when needed

We serve all of San Mateo County and the cities of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View. Palo Alto, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills in Santa Clara County.

RSVP provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, day care centers, police departments, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental insurance while on duty, pre-service orientation, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
