Many seniors in East Harlem are unfortunately homebound, isolated, and have little to no human interactions on a daily basis. Our Friendly Visiting program seeks to match volunteers with our senior clients to offer opportunities for them to talk to someone, stay active, and feel like a part of the community.
Develop a friendship with a homebound senior by spending an hour a week chatting, reading aloud, going for a walk, playing board games, and/or assisting with light errands. This is a volunteer opportunity that holds a commitment of at least 4 hours a month for at least 6 months. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Mission Statement
Union Settlement is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.
Description
Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
