Our history education program, Westward Ho!, gives school children the opportunity to explore pioneer life in an interactive way. In order to provide such a unique, hands-on experience, we need volunteers to help facilitate our activity stations, which include: Packing the wagon, wagon ride, setting up camp, gold panning, and pioneer games. These stations help students directly understand the perils, excitment, and opportunities involved in the journey west during the 19th-century. Last year, the program hosted 44 schools, 2,691 students and 602 teachers and parents.
Westward Ho! takes place each weekday in May (except Memorial Day), with shifts running from 9:00 am-1:00 pm. This program takes place outdoors in all weather. Desired volunteers should have an interest in history and be able to teach basic concepts to students ranging in age from 6-12.
Those interested will need to complete an application, interview/orientation, and background check. Training specific to the program is also required. Dates are scheduled for April 17 (2:00-4:00 pm) and April 18 (12:00-2:00 pm). New volunteers must attend one session.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Four Mile Historic Park is to educate a diverse community through experiences which promote preservation, interpretation and enjoyment of Denver’s western heritage.
Description
Built in 1859, Four Mile House is Denver's oldest standing structure and the centerpiece of a 12-acre park. Built as a wagon stop and wayside Inn along the Cherokee Trail, it was the last stop en route to Denver and the first leaving town. After the railroad arrived in 1870, the Booth family transformed the site into a prosperous 600 acre ranch/farm. Today, this National Register Historic House museum and living history farm offers programs and heritage events that transport visitors to the early days of western migration and settlement. We focus on the history of the site and give participants hand-ons opportunities to learn about life in the Denver region during the late 19th-century.
