The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is seeking Science Education Interns for each of its Science Education areas: Early Childhood Education, Physics, Chemistry, Design, Earth Science, Life Science, Food Science, and Featured Exhibits. OMSI internships are unpaid positions which may be completed for school credit. They offer the successful candidate a unique opportunity to learn about informal science education at OMSI.
Internship Summary:
Science Education Interns volunteer in one of OMSI’s interactive exhibit halls and labs. This position has two roles: (1) facilitate the visitors’ learning experiences with informal interactions, demonstrations, and lab activities, and (2) assist with maintenance of the labs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interactwith visitors to help them explore and learn from exhibits and lab activities.
- Share accurate science and museum information with visitors.
- Maintain the integrity and appearance of hall and lab exhibits.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff.
- Help train, coach and supervise education volunteers.
- Be prepared to be trained and work in multiple science halls or labs as needed.
- Assume tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Hall Educators.
Knowledge/Skills:
- Basic knowledge and interest in science.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Able to present science process and content in an engaging way to a broad age range.
- Must present a professional personal appearance.
- Dependable, punctual, and willing to commit to a schedule.
- Self-directed and willing to take initiative.
- Able to stand for extended periods of time.
Education and Work Experience:
- Working toward a BA/BS in science, education, or communications preferred, with college course work in science.
- Experience working with the public in formal or informal educational settings highly desirable.
Application Deadlines:
OMSI’s Science Education internships have specific application deadlines for each season. These deadlines are:
Season - Application Deadline - Notification Date
Fall - September 20 - October 1
Winter/Spring - January 1 - January 15
Summer - April 7 - April 28
While applications only need to be submitted by the deadline in order to be fully considered, early applications are encouraged.
