The CA Highway Patrol Retired Senior Volunteer Program (CHP-RSVP) is looking for senior citizens who want to serve their community through safety and service programs of crime prevention and education. Volunteers are asked to spend a minimum of four hours a week performing a variety of duties either at our office or in the field patrolling communities as well as other assignments. Field Support Position duties include: Community outreach, radar surveys, traffic control, assisting school crossing guards, and CHP "Ride-A-Longs". School Crossing Guards: assist crossing guards with traffic safety; fill in when possible during regular crossing guard's absence; maintain communications with school officials. Vehicle Fleet: Pick up new patrol cars at the motor pool; deliver run outs to the motor pool, strip wrecked or salvaged patrol cars; install radars; help mechanic whenever requested; inventory items in patrol cars; refill trauma kits.A CHP Retired Senior Volunteer applicant must attend a formal training academy. Public relations, CHP chain of command, rules and regulations, radio procedures, defensive driving, and traffic background screening process. Because RSVP members have access to confidential and sensitive information, all applicants are subject to a background screening process. Location San Mateo County and Santa Clara County, please specify perefred location at time of inquiry.

We serve all of San Mateo County and the cities of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View. Palo Alto, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills in Santa Clara County.

RSVP provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, day care centers, police departments, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental insurance while on duty, pre-service orientation, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
