About UFC College Readiness Workshops and College Visits: United Friends of the Children holds weekly Saturday Workshops for the approx. 500 youth in our College Readiness Program! The first Saturday of every month, we have our 7th and 8th grade Workshop; these tend to focus on introspective and/or community building exercises. The second Saturday of every month, we have our 9th and 10th grade Workshop; these tend to focus on career planning and introducing the youth to what it means to be a professional. The third Saturday of every month, we have our 11th and 12th grade Workshop; these focus more on the college application process and related topics. The last Saturday of every month is usually reserved for our College Visits, when we bring our youth to tour and explore local colleges and universities; on occasion, this weekend instead might be used to bring them to other local educational sites, such as museums, tours of local corporate offices, etc. At the close of each of these events, students complete an evaluation of their experience.

Position Description and Duties: The College Readiness Chaperone/Workshop Facilitator will always have the support of UFC staff. If on a monthly field trip, the Chaperone will supervise students and assist with event implementation, food set-up, student debriefing, and administering event evaluation. If at a Saturday Workshop, the Workshop Facilitator will supervise students and assist with the implementation of the lesson/activities, facilitate small-group work, distribute snacks and lunch, and monitor workshop evaluation. All volunteers will be expected to monitor student behavior, help our youth stay engaged and focused, and provide guidance and discipline, when appropriate.

Volunteer Process: Volunteers are recruited for open positions until the positions are filled. They are selected based on their skills, commitment and availability. Prior to beginning service, volunteers are required to attend an orientation, get fingerprinted, and pass a background check. UFC is seeking to build a meaningful, long-term relationship with its volunteer community and is looking for volunteers eager to connect with our organization’s mission and youth. Please note: it may take up to three weeks to be processed after attending an orientation.
