Samaritan House is a private non-profit organization providing services to help meet the essential daily needs of over 12,000 low-income people within San Mateo County. They provide an interim "safety net" for individuals and families in need while ultimately helping them move toward self-sufficiency. With the help of over 3,000 volunteers, they provide food, clothing, shelter, health care, worker resources, and counseling services all free of charge to their clients.

Bread Basket Volunteer: Drive to various stores/vendors to pick up food donations; deliver donations to Kitchen/Food Pantry for distribution. Requirements: must be at least 18 years old; licensed, insured driver; sign a liability waiver form; drive own vehicle. Commitment: 1 morning pick-up shift per week; 6 months. Location: various.

Food Pantry Volunteer: Unload, sort and stock donated food items; pack individual bags of grocery items for distribution to clients; greet clients and fill voucher orders. Requirements: must be able to move and lift up to 20 pounds; respectful and welcoming of clients; protective of clients' privacy Location: San Mateo.

Mobile Meals Volunteer: Pick up prepared meals at Kitchen and deliver to list of designated individuals. Requirements: must be at least 18 years old; sign a liability waiver form; be licensed, insured driver; drive own vehicle Commitment: 1 late afternoon shift per week; 6 months. Location: San Mateo.

Dining Room Volunteer: Set up and serve food to clients; package meals to be picked up; clean up Requirements: must be able to sit and stand for periods of time; be respectful and welcoming of clients; protective of clients' privacy. Commitment: 1 shift per week; 6 months Location: Dining Room, Westside Church of God San Mateo.

Kitchen Volunteer: Assist with food preparation; sort, peel, cut vegetables; make sandwiches; various tasks as needed. Requirements: must be able to sit and stand for periods of time; use kitchen utensils (knives, paring tools, etc.) Commitment: 1 morning shift / week; 3 months Location: San Mateo.

Kitchen Assistance Volunteer: Saturdays Assist Samaritan House staff person with receipt and preparation of food donations; peel, cut vegetables and other food items; wrap bread, etc. Requirements: Must be able to stand and move for period of 3 hours; must be at least 18 years old or be accompanied by parent. Commitment: 2 shifts per month; 6 months

RSVP provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, day care centers, police departments, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental insurance while on duty, pre-service orientation, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
