AmeriCorps volunteers will work with youth and teachers at either Cheney Middle School or Liberty Middle School in West Fargo, ND. Volunteers will work with service-learning, a method that engages students and deepens learning objectives through community service. Volunteering dates are from October 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016.

Volunteers need to complete 450 total hours of service by 5/31/2016. Schedule is somewhat flexible and allows for AmeriCorps members to student teach, attend classes, and have other employment during service. AmeriCorps members will need to complete at minimum several hours each week on-site at the school during the school year. AmeriCorps volunteers with this program qualify for a modest living allowance disbursed twice monthly.

For 450 hours of service: total living allowance amount of $3,263; education award of $1,515. Education awards can be used for qualifying student loan payments or educational expenses.

YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PASS FEDERAL AND STATE CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS.

Applicants need to be US Citizens, US Nationals, or lawful permanent residents. Applicants need to be local to Fargo/Moorhead/West Fargo area; no relocation will be provided. Applicants must have an interest in working with youth, teachers, and schools. Applicants must be reliable, punctual, enthusiastic, and creative. A background in education (degree, teaching/classroom experience, tutoring/mentoring experience, etc.) IS REQUIRED. Minimum age is 17, no maximum.

Description

AmeriCorps State volunteer opportunities are part-time (a total of 450 hours) and confer a modest living allowance (total of $3,263). In addition, a completion bonus of $1,515 in the form of an education award that can be used to pay for tuition or to pay down student loans. AmeriCorps volunteers will be placed in schools to help with service-learning, a method that engages students and deepens learning objectives through community service. Reliability, punctuality, enthusiasm, creativity, the desire to work with youth, teachers, and schools, initiative, and commitment to helping others are desirable qualities in AmeriCorps candidates. We are specifically looking for retired teachers, substitute teachers, new teaching graduates, or others with teaching degrees.
