About Orchestra 2001

Location:

26 South 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103, US

Mission Statement

Orchestra 2001 is dedicated to performing and promoting the music of 20th and 21st centuries, premiering new works, providing a major focus for the best new music of our time, introducing unknown older works, and reaching out to regional and international audiences through recordings and tours.

Description

Award-winning Orchestra 2001 celebrates its 25th anniversary concert season in 2012-13. Since the orchestra’s founding in 1988, O2001 has grown into one of Philadelphia’s most important cultural institutions and one of America’s most esteemed champions of new music. For the three years in a row, (2007, 2008, and 2009) the League of American Orchestras and ASCAP recognized the orchestra as outstanding leaders in the field of new music with their "Awards for Adventurous Programming." In 2008, Philadelphia's mayor Michael Nutter presented James Freeman with the city's Liberty Bell Award, in recognition of the Orchestra's twenty years of world-class performances and recordings of new music, especially by Philadelphia-area composers.

Orchestra 2001’s commitment to performing contemporary music is unparalleled. The record speaks for itself: over 80 world premieres, over 100 Greater Philadelphia premieres, over 200 works by 130 American composers, of which more than 135 works were by 60 Philadelphia-area composers. Especially noteworthy is the relationship it has with Pulitzer Prize winning composer and Media, Pennsylvania resident George Crumb. Orchestra 2001 has taken his music worldwide.
