Worcester House, New Echota
Worcester House is the only surviving original house on the land of the former Cherokee community of New Echota. The rest of the original buildings were destroyed after the Cherokee were forced to leave Georgia on the "Trail of Tears." The house was constructed in 1828 as a two-story building. The Worcesters lived in the house from 1828 until 1834, when it was confiscated by a Georgian who obtained title in the 1832 Land Lottery. The house was owned by many Georgians through the years until 1952. The house was turned over to the state of Georgia, and in 1954 to the former government agency, the Georgia Historical Commission. It is managed by the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, part of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. In 1962, the New Echota Historic Site was opened to the public; it preserves the restored Worcester House as an important symbol of New Echota and Cherokee civilization.

As a certified site along on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, we'll be working on sprucing up the landscaping at New Echota and cleaning up New Town Creek Nature Trail. Come learn about this significant part of Cherokee, Georgia and United States history as we work to improve part of this important National Historic Trail.

Our mission is simple. We partner with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, local community and business leaders and community volunteers to promote, support, improve and preserve New Echota State Historic Site.

Description

Friends of New Echota State Historic Site, a chapter of Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, is a group of local volunteers who work to support New Echota State Historic Site in numerous ways. Our volunteers often help out with special events, improvement projects and maintenance tasks at the site. Through partnerships with local business and community leaders, we help fund site improvements, maintenance needs and interpretive programming.
