Are You Looking to Volunteer & Learn About Making?

Inventerns

Do you love making things and taking things apart? Do you enjoy working with kids and helping them bring their creative imaginations to life? Interested in gaining teaching and leadership experience or become an executive assistant? Want to know what it’s like to run a maker space in Los Angeles? If you’ve answered "Yes" to any of these questions, we highly encourage you to apply to become a Maker Guilds Inventern. We will train you on how to effectively interact with kids and facilitate Tinker.Make.Innovate activities at our Flagship Maker Guilds Meetings and fundraising events. You will also have the opportunity to work alongside our AmeriCorps VISTA outreach and development coordinators to gain valuable insight on how nonprofit organizations operate.

After School Tinker Make Innovate Program

We bring in students from low-income neighborhoods in area schools and we allow them to make and learn free of charge.. We help them with their homework to make sure that they are able to do all the wonderful things that they dream of doing. Then we have TMI Lab where you and them can play, explore, wonder, learn sewing, robotics, electronics, coding, 3D modeling, 3D printing, laser cutting and even start a business. You get all the aspects of a maker space volunteer, but you would be working with low-income families either Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays.

Opportunity Makers Volunteers

Do you want to give back to your community but always seem to be juggling a million-and-one things? If that’s the case, you can become an Opportunity Maker at Maker Guilds! The Opportunity Makers volunteer program is designed for those who want to volunteer but are unable to commit more than a few hours every month due to their busy schedule. We welcome volunteers like yourselves to help us during some of our one-day fundraising events. Maker Guilds holds several Making/STEAM fundraisers throughout the year and we are always in need of dedicated people to help with the events so everything runs smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering at our events as an Opportunity Maker, please contact us for a list of upcoming events.

Are You Looking to Teach & Share Your Knowledge?

Maker Space Fellows

Maker Fellows are dedicated, enthusiastic individuals who have a passion or expertise in a particular field. We are actively seeking various Fellows to come to our maker space and work on your passions, whatever that may be. We request a commitment of 20 hours a month for at least three months, and in exchange, you will receive free membership to The Exploratory Maker Space ($75 value per month) and have unfettered access to our maker space, materials and tools. In addition, we highly encourage you to hold your own workshops and classes at The Exploratory, for which we will pay you for. You can fill one of our available fellow positions or you can create one of your own. The available Make Space Fellows positions are: Electronics & Robotics Fellow, Events & Programming Fellow, Communications Fellow, Sewing & Textiles Fellow, Grant Writing Fellow, Fabrication Fellow, and Computer Science Fellow.

Library Workshops

We hold workshops at libraries throughout the Los Angeles and Culver City area. The workshop can involve any aspect of making that you have a specific expertise in. So if you want to share your making, tinkering, or innovation expertise with the next generation than this volunteering opportunity is right for you. Like most of the other volunteer opportunities here at the Exploratory we offer free training and the ability to qualify for free membership here at the maker space at the Exploratory.

Exploratory Classes

Along with workshops held at the libraries we also need people to come teach a series of classes here at the Exploratory maker space in Culver City. Just like our Maker Space Fellows, the exploratory classes will be based on certain categories such as: computer coding, electronics, textiles, paper, 3D modeling, etc. The classes we provide are always changing and we are willing to accommodate your individual talents and skills to create new classes and provide programming.

Seasonal Camps

Here at the Exploratory, we have three seasonal camps: Winter, Summer, and Spring. Usually they run about three weeks each and involve a range of topics each time. So if you want to volunteer for a children’s camp, but also want to escape the weather, the camps at the Exploratory is the place for you.

For more information or to apply for one or more of these volunteer opportunities please email, Jessica Baggs, Outreach Coordinator at outreachvista.makered.gmail.com
