ORGANIZATION: RSVP of San Mateo & Northern Santa Clara Counties

Early Literacy Program is a school-based program designed to help children who are reading below grade level.

Help children (grades 1 - 3, on a one-to-one basis) improve their reading, fluency and comprehension. All volunteers receive training.

All volunteers tutor at their assigned school during school hours. Participating schools are located in East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Redwood City, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale.

Tutors work one-on-one with two students (30 minutes each, back to back) twice weekly for a total of two hours per week during most of the school year. Most tutoring takes place during school hours on weekdays.

Avenidas-Early Literacy Program is currently in eight districts and at 26 schools:

Los Altos School District: Covington, Oak Avenue;
Mountain View Whisman School District: Bubb, Huff, Landels, Monta Loma, Stevenson, Theuerkauf;
Palo Alto Unified School District: Addison, Barron Park, Juana Briones, El Carmelo,
Portola Valley School District: Ormondale
Escondido, Fairmeadow, Lucille M. Nixon, Ohlone, Palo Verde;
Ravenswood City School District: Brentwood, Willow Oaks
Redwood City School District: Hawes, Roosevelt
Santa Clara Unified School District: Briarwood
Sunnyvale Elementary School District: Bishop, Ellis, Fairwood

RSVP is administered by the Corporation for National & Community Service, the federal agency that supports service and volunteering programs to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement. We serve all of San Mateo County and the cities of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View. Palo Alto, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills in Santa Clara County.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY!

RSVP provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, day care centers, police departments, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental insurance while on duty, pre-service orientation, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
