ORGANIZATION: Accokeek Foundation

The Stitch 'n Time club meets monthly on the 2nd Saturday. The club is a volunteer-based textiles club where members enjoy learning about the cultivation of fleece, wool dyeing, and colonial textiles. Club members use wool from the Accokeek Foundation's heritage breed sheep to card, spin, knit, and crochet. For those handier with a sewing needle, join us in creating 18th century clothing for our costumed interpreters. For more information, visit our website at www.accokeek.org.

Mission Statement

According to the Foundation's 1957 charter, "It shall be the purpose of this Corporation to preserve, protect and foster, for scientific, educational or charitable use and study for the benefit of the people of the nation, the historical sites and relics, trees, plants, and wildlife rapidly disappearing from an area of great natural beauty along the Maryland shore of the historic Potomac River."

Description

In partnership with the National Park Service, the Accokeek Foundation stewards 200 acres of Piscataway Park. Situated directly across the Potomac River from George Washington’s Mount Vernon, this land was protected to preserve historic views and now serves as an outdoor classroom for educational programs about land conservation, historic preservation, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship. Entertaining tours and performances, customized experience based activities, and service learning opportunities help visitors connect to the land and to one another.
