ORGANIZATION: Accokeek Foundation

  • 7 people are interested

The Accokeek Foundation is seeking workshare volunteers for the 2015 growing season. If you are interested in the principles of sustainable agriculture and farm market operations, and are able to commit to a minimum of 4 hours for 15 weeks during the growing season (March - November), then join the Ecosystem Farm Workshare Corps. As a workshare corps volunteer, you will receive a weekly share of produce in exchange for the opportunity to be stewards of the land, working on a nonprofit, certified-organic educational farm operation as you learn about growing produce, raising chickens and egg production, permaculture, and farming sustainably.

Mission Statement

According to the Foundation's 1957 charter, "It shall be the purpose of this Corporation to preserve, protect and foster, for scientific, educational or charitable use and study for the benefit of the people of the nation, the historical sites and relics, trees, plants, and wildlife rapidly disappearing from an area of great natural beauty along the Maryland shore of the historic Potomac River."

Description

In partnership with the National Park Service, the Accokeek Foundation stewards 200 acres of Piscataway Park. Situated directly across the Potomac River from George Washington’s Mount Vernon, this land was protected to preserve historic views and now serves as an outdoor classroom for educational programs about land conservation, historic preservation, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship. Entertaining tours and performances, customized experience based activities, and service learning opportunities help visitors connect to the land and to one another.
