SNAP’s mission is providing human services, housing, and economic opportunities in a manner which enhances dignity, and advocating for programs, policies, and resources that maximize individual capacities and promote strong communities. This position is in our Economic Development department, which helps people learn financial management skills to become economically self-sufficient. Services include small business development and loans as well as personal financial counseling and training. The VISTA member will work to make asset building programs, such as financial services, employment, homeownership and business development accessible to Veterans by building partnerships and programs with organizations serving those populations.

This is an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) position. AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. The purpose of this Asset Building VISTA project is to make existing services (financial education, employment services, access to capital and other banking services, assistance with homeownership and business ownership) available to new populations that are currently underserved, particularly targeting veterans. The VISTA will continue development of a sustainable program for veterans through needs assessments, curriculum development, volunteer mobilization, and program evaluation. The second area the VISTA will focus on is developing a strategic plan for sustainability including grant writing and resource development. The third area of focus will be in getting veterans connected with housing resources through SNAPs housing services.

This is a one year term April 24, 2015- April 23, 2016 with a 3 day Pre Service Orientation April 20-23.
