Global Health Corps is a one-year paid fellowship that pairs young professionals with organizations (fellowship placement organizations) that require new thinking and innovative solutions. We believe that great ideas don't change the world, great PEOPLE do! The fellowship begins in July 2015 and extends through August 2016. Fellows engage in professional development training, mentorship and thoughtful community-building, and continue to draw upon their fellowship experience and the GHC alumni network as they build careers of lasting impact.

Fellows are placed in organizations in pairs - one international fellow and one local fellow from the placement country - creating a fellowship team that is a central part of the fellowship experience.


About the Placement Organization:
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) supports efforts by Latin America and Caribbean countries to reduce poverty and inequality. We aim to bring about development in a sustainable, climate-friendly way. Established in 1959, we are the largest source of development financing for Latin America and the Caribbean, with a strong commitment to achieve measurable results, increased integrity, transparency and accountability. We have an evolving reform agenda that seeks to increase our development impact in the region.While we are a regular bank in many ways, we are also unique in some key respects. Besides loans, we also provide grants and technical assistance and complete research. Our shareholders are 48 member countries, including 26 Latin American and Caribbean borrowing members, who have a majority ownership of the IDB.

Fellow Position Overview:
The IDB Social Protection and Health Fellow will be an integral team member in the IDB’s Social Protection and Health Division (SPH), participating in the preparation and supervision of health projects, and addressing top priorities in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Through its Division of Social Protection and Health, the IDB helps countries in the region expand access to integrated primary health care services, strengthen health system organization and performance, set priorities in meeting current and emerging needs, and properly finance rising health costs in order to achieve healthier and more equitable societies.Examples of work assignments include analyzing health data to establish country epidemiological profiles, designing interventions tailored to address public health challenges, and supervising the implementation of such interventions. The Fellow will work with experienced, multidisciplinary teams, and will be supervised by and work closely with SPH specialists.

Responsibilities:
Participate as a team member in two of the Division’s regional programs: Salud Mesoamerica SM2015 and SPOON: Sustained Program to Improve Nutrition, and in Sectoral Economic Work projects
Process and analyze health data
Produce background information and review literature
Support preparatory work for approval health projects (design of interventions, monitoring and evaluation arrangements, among other activities)
Support activities for the supervision of the implementation stage of health projects
Participate in missions to LAC countries during project preparation and supervision

Qualifications:

There is no single experience, background, quality or skill that makes someone the "right" candidate for the fellowship. Rather, we are looking for outstanding individuals who are seeking to apply their skills and their passion for health equity to a lifelong community of global changemakers. We do not expect that fellows will have a background in public health or that they have been involved in international development work before. We believe that global health organizations can greatly benefit from individuals who have worked in or studied a wide variety of fields. We strongly encourage applicants from all sectors to apply, including but by no means limited to engineering, finance, consulting, government, architecture, research, technology, and education.

Required Skills and Experience:
Fluency and strong writing skills in Spanish and English

Preferred Skills and Experience:
Demonstrated ability to design and/or implement projects in developing countries
Experience in health economics, public health and/or medicine
Knowledge of statistical programs (e.g. Stata)
Experience working with databases
Creativity and ability to work well in teams

Description

Global Health Corps mobilizes a global community of emerging leaders to build the movement for health equity. We place recent college graduate and young professionals from diverse professional backgrounds in health non-profits and government offices in the US, East Africa and Southern Africa for a year of service in order to strengthen and learn from the organization.

Fellows focus on creating solutions for a variety of current health issues like HIV, maternal and child health, nutrition and healthcare access. Through additional training, community building, leadership development and mentorship, these young people complete their fellowship with skills to be change makers and paradigm- shifters in the global health field throughout their careers. Since its founding in 2009, GHC has deployed 450 fellows to work in 7 countries.
