Nestled up to the beautiful mountains surrounding Dehesa Valley, Challenge Ranch brings a new kind of spirit to East County, San Diego. The 10 acre ranch is home to:

  • 25 Challenge Ranch Horses: Throughbreds, Arabs, Welsh, Tennessee Walkers, Mustangs, & Quarter Horse
  • Countless Memories
  • Challenge Ranch Riders (Aged 5 -17)
  • In addition, events are held at the Ranch throughout the year, including equitation shows, show jumping, cross country, summer camps, mud run, music programs, and fun activity days.

Volunteers are needed for maintenance of the ranch. Projects range from light ranch work such as sweeping, sorting supplies, weeding, or painting to heavy duty projects such as digging large holes for posts, moving hay bales, or cutting down trees. If you have special skills, e.g., plumbing, irrigation, carpentry, please inform the Team Leader. Note: Volunteers will not be working with the children or the horses, which requires a separate background check. -Parking Instructions: Turn into the Ranch at the small sign on the chain link fence; slowly proceed on the curving, gravel driveway past the various corrals. You will see a blue donation bin, and a circle area where you can park next to the house. It is a long drive and car pools would be useful. -Check-In Location: Walk up to the backyard deck, near the pool -Required Attire: closed toed shoes (sneakers or boots) and older clothes you don’t mind getting dirty -What to Bring: Optional to bring sunscreen, hats, snacks; they provide water; bring your swim gear if you like to cool off after a hard day’s work. Be advised it is much hotter in East County than it is in San Diego! Volunteers may use the swimming pool to cool off and relax after their shifts! Bring your swim suits and towels if you like.
