Left Forum is looking for volunteers who have experience and interest in any or all of the areas of graphic design, editorial, and/or content production. We seek creative, skilled individuals interested in helping design, write and/or edit posters, flyers, banner ads, website graphics and content, and conference and event program guides as well as helping to develop brand images and a logo. Left Forum engages hundreds of artists every year who bring their ideas and work to share with thousands of other conference and event participants. This volunteer opportunity taps into this and other creative communities of the graphic arts, and engages the artistry of editing and content production.

We’re a small organization with a dedicated group of organizers, staff and volunteers with a passion for social justice, community organizing, and progressive change. Located in the CUNY Graduate Center, you’ll be working in an interesting (and very relaxed) office where you’ll interact, meet, and learn from scholars, activists, authors and artists in a rewarding intellectual political milieu.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Help design brand images and a logo
  • Design posters, flyers, banner ads, website graphics, and more
  • Help produce and edit text-based web content, social media content, press-media content, and all public relations content
  • Help produce the conference program guide utilizing InDesign
  • Work with Left Forum staff, conference participants to coordinate program content and layout
  • Act as primary liaison to printers
  • Work with Left Forum staff to write and edit various key many communications (email blasts, ground mailings, brochures, flyers, postcards, etc.)
  • Help with some web graphics and html email production
  • Long term possibilities of web design or graphic design projects

Background and Desired Experience

  • Some experience with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other design and publishing software (for graphic designers and editors), html knowledge preferred
  • Superior editorial, proofreading, research, and verbal communication
  • Experience with databases and spreadsheets (e.g., Access, Excel, Google Docs; CiviCRM)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • High level of attention to detail and seeing projects through to their completion
  • Ability to prioritize and handle a variety of projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and in a team
  • Interest in grassroots organizing and social justice

About Volunteering

We ask for 10+ hours a week, although any amount of volunteer time will help. Hours are flexible and can be adapted to fit your schedule. We also ask for a minimum of a three-month commitment. A modicum of computer skills is desired. Volunteer opportunities begin immediately.

ABOUT LEFT FORUM

Continuing a tradition begun in the 1960s, Left Forum convenes an international conference each spring in New York City. The conference involves a broad spectrum of progressive and Left intellectuals, organizers and academics who come together to share ideas to transform the world; to better understand commonalities, differences, and alternatives to current predicaments; and to engage a wide range of critical perspectives on the world. Left Forum 2011 drew more than 3,500 participants for 300 panels. Recent conference plenary sessions featured Noam Chomsky, Arundhati Roy, Cornel West, and Barbara Ehrenreich.
